Mechanical and protective film applications

There are many industrial applications making use of the mechanical properties of thin films in the thickness range of 10..100 nm:

  • multiple-layer coatings on tools as protection against impact damage, wear, and oxidation,
  • intermediate layers increasing adhesion, bonding, or wetting in gluing, coating, and print technologies,
  • intermediate layers decreasing adhesion, bonding, or wetting in polymer processing, composite and food industries, and for architectural glass,
  • slide layers under mixed and dry friction conditions.

The members of the Center of Competence have got long-time experience in the development and application of thin films. Based on experience in the 10 ...100nm range, ultra-thin layers below 10nm are increasingly becoming the subject of interest for industrial application. This tendency is due to several reasons, as the feasibility of realizing novel mechanical or other properties via ultra-thin films or stacks of them.
